Tenor Carl Tanner and the Connecticut Lyric Opera and the Connecticut Virtuosi Chamber Orchestra
“Opera Under the Stars” with Internationally Renowned Tenor Carl Tanner and the Connecticut Lyric Opera and the Connecticut Virtuosi Chamber Orchestra Adrian Sylveen, Director with Special guest, Jurate Svedaite, soprano
Carl Tanner born and raised in Arlington, Virginia into "very modest means". Music was always a part of Carl’s life, with his earliest exposure to music in the form of country icons such as John Denver, Willie Nelson, and Roy Clark.. A neighbor convinced him to try out for the high school chorus after hearing him sing in the shower. A turning point for Tanner came one day while he was inching his way along Interstate 95 in the cab of his 18-wheeler, singing the Giacomo Puccini aria "E lucevan le stelle" from Act III of Tosca to pass the time, when a woman in a convertible in the next lane called up to him: "Is that you, or is that the radio?" "That's me, lady," Tanner replied. "Well then, you've missed your calling," the woman declared. "You should be singing for a living, not driving". Following odd jobs during and after his high school and college days, he realized, they were not his “calling” and soon decided that he wanted to sing. In 1990, he moved to New York City with a small bag of clothes & $75.00 to his name. A short time after, he walked into a restaurant sang for the bartender and that moment changed his life! In the restaurant that night was the head of the Santa Fe Opera who immediately offered him a role on one of the operas they were doing the following summer. That chance encounter began Carl’s successful Operatic tenor career!
